Public space would be almost unthinkable without them, and the area in front of the Staatstheater Karlsruhe is no exception: there lie two Stolpersteine memorial plaques by the Cologne artist Gunter Demnig commemorating the singer Lilly Jankelowitz and the actor Paul Gemmeke, both victims of the Holocaust. They evoke the saddest chapter of German cultural history: theatre, the very site of freedom and the avant-garde, was the first institution to be forced into immediate political conformity after the National Socialists seized power. This was also the case in Karlsruhe, a city that prides itself on being tolerant today – and yet it was the first city with a “Jew-free district”. With “Stolpersteine Staatstheater”, Hans-Werner Kroesinger and Regina Dura, two of the most important independent documentary theatre-makers in Germany, were invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen.
